Heartburn is not a recurring condition that cannot be cured but it is one that is prone to resurfacing later on in life unless the same methods used for heartburn treatment are not continued to be used through the rest of one’s life. Once a person has suffered through a bout of acid reflux, it is always easier for him or her to get it back. Hence, the same things that they did to get rid of heartburn must be continued for some time afterwards as well just to ensure that the stomach and esophagus heal up properly.
At most, one needs to stick to their altered diet and sleeping habits for a couple of months afterwards the disappearance of GERD. Then they can get back into their usual schedule. However, staying off cigarettes, alcohol and caffeine can and will go a long way in protecting against future reoccurrences. The worst thing with acid reflux is that when it does return, it does leave a scar in the throat and permanently eroding some surface area of the neck.
